Never thought I would ever fall for it, but recently I've been regularly reading LADIES BLOGS. Yes i know, it's weird.

I've been knowing besosyfotos for a while now. Sometimes the snapshots are a bit too girly/ neo hippish/ Williamsburg for my taste, but it regularly displays interesting pictures, with an atmosphere of its own. Below are 2 pictures from a recent selection from Laura Ingalls Sturges, the lady behind it all. Unfortunately it's not credited, but it shows this lady can definitely choose images.

There you'll also find a post related to fashion icon Iris Apfel ( see previous post), with a link to her interview in The Guardian, and again, a good choice of chosen pictures : so, well done Madame Sturges.

Also very feminine in the mood, with a really strong identity is Ensuite, Clarisse Demory's blog. It's all about patterns, flowery interiors and pastel colours, but never soppy. Each post seems carefully thought of and still simple and intuitive.

Miss Demory is also in charge of french brand Thomsen's blog, where today I found again my favorite & long lost Hunter S. Thompson's picture (no, he's not on it, see below).

Clarisse has already been offered to blog for a big ready-to- wear brand, but it seems that more commercial project won't prevent her to stick to her very individual world.

Richard Amsel was born in Philadelphia in December, 1947. While a student at the Philadelphia College of Art, he proposed poster art for the Barbra Streisand musical Hello, Dolly!, that was selected for the film’s campaign after a nationwide artists’ talent search ; he was only 22 at the time. His illustrations caught the attention of singer/songwriter Barry Manilow, who introduced him to Bette Midler. Soon Amsel designed Middler’s album cover The Divine Miss M. More album covers followed, as well as series of magazine ads and movie posters, for some of the most popular films of the 70’s : The Champ, Chinatown, Julia, The Last Picture Show, The Muppet Movie, Murder on the Orient Express, Papillon…
In 1972, TV Guide commissioned Amsel to do a cover featuring the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Thus began Amsel's 13-year association with the entertainment magazine, resulting in over 40 covers—a record held to this day. The "Amsel covers", feature portraits of such figures as John Travolta, Elvis Presley, Ingrid Bergman, Johnny Carson, Tom Selleck, Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Princess Grace and Katharine Hepburn. The 80's marked a dramatic change in movie marketing campaigns, with more and more employing photographs in favor of illustrations. Yet Amsel remained productive, his trademark signature becoming a widely recognizable fixture on further magazine covers and movie posters, including Flash Gordon, and The Dark Crystal, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

Lutrario nightclub, in Torino, was designed in 1959 by italian architect & designer Carlo Mollino (1905-1973, "Crazy, artistic, stingy, obsessed with taxes. Sex maniac, master architect, drug addict, genius " according to this website;).
Apart for designing places, furnitures & race cars among other things, Mr Mollino was also a photographer. He especially loved to take beautiful pictures of ladies.

Allen Ruppersberg came of age as an artist in the late 1960s in Los Angeles, where he was part of the burgeoning Conceptual movement of that time and place. The artists with whom he allied himself most closely in those early years were Bas Jan Ader and Ger Val Elk, both Dutch, but living in the area at that time, as well as William Leavitt, Allan McColllum, and William Wegman. Like these artists and other Los Angeles Conceptual pioneers such as Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari, Ruppersberg used photographs he made or found in combination with text and narrative strategies to investigate such issues as the role of the artist, the relationship between nature and culture, text and image, and fiction and fact.

In this artist's book, Ruppersberg is re-using a 1956 "Guest Informant" book from the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco as a support for his own photographs. Alluding to his former projects such as "Al's Grand Hotel," the present volume also includes newly commissioned essays by writers such as Greil Marcus and Phillip van der Bossche ( from press sheet).

An exhibition dedicated to italian design mouvement Memphis. Showed are beautiful and crazy furnitures & objects, along with photos & texts : a great occasion to witness the extravagance of the 80's, when good taste was old story and the desire to express one's creativity came first .

Here an extract of a powerful text from Etorre Sottsass (from Memphis, the New International Style, Electa, 1981) :
" The fact is that we are not afraid anymore, I'm talking about this fear of having or not having to represent something or someone, elites or dropouts, traditions or lies. We don't have this fear anymore, transmited by the past, nor that even more violent one sent by the future."

Black Panthers 1968

In 1968, Life magazine sent photographer Howard L. Bingham and writer Gilbert Moore to document the story of the Black Panthers group. They followed the Panthers for months at numerous rallies in Oakland, Berkeley and even the United Nations.
The story remained unpublished due to a disagreement between Moore and the magazine over the tone of the story, it's now published.

Oui, bon ok, on est un peu en vacances de blog, mais ce n'est pas une raison pour arrêter de lire les journaux, encore moins pour passer quelques heures sur le net...
Sur Pitchfork (c'est pas original, ok) je suis tombée sur cette ITW d' Ari Up, chanteuse des Slits, qui y livre ses influences musicales et raconte un peu sa vie : John Lydon était le petit ami de sa mère, Joe Strummer lui a appris la guitare, elle a fait les 400 coups avec Neneh Cherry, en gros Voici c'est chiant à côté. Comment ça, Voici c'est chiant ?
